Press Release – UPF Peace Debate-September 2024

Empowering the youth to cultivate peace in everyday life

Giving the youth the opportunity to reflect on the power they possess to cultivate peace in their own lives and repel this positive energy in the society. This was the aim of the debate organized by the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) to commemorate World Peace Day.

The event which included secondary students from Pointe Larue, Anse Boileau and Anse Royale school took place at the CEPS conference room on Thursday 19th September 2024.

The event is a collaboration between UPF a CEPS member association and the National Peace Committee. It is part of a series of activities being organized to celebrate Peace. This year’s United Nations designated theme is Cultivating a Culture of Peace. 

The debate’s goal was to continue promoting peace and its importance in our day-to-day living. 

In his open remarks, the CEO of CEPS, Mr. Alvin Laurence elaborated on the metaphoric value of the word cultivate. Allowing the students to grasps the value of peace being the fruit of their labor, a practice that can develop into a culture that can further influence their immediate environment and society.

The debate was directed by a panel of four who led the reflection on sub topics such as Youth as the family for tomorrow and youth as an integral part of the family today by Mr. Jude Marie. The power of women to promote peace by Mrs. Paule Belle and the contribution of female leaders in promoting peace by Mrs. Francoise Larue. Mr. Roger Alphonse took the role of moderator.

The youth interaction was satisfactory whereby they questioned their individual roles as agents of peace in a sophisticated world of modern technology. The newly elected Chairperson of CEPS, Dr Odile Decomarmond congratulated the participants and invited them to lead peace initiatives in their school.

The debate has proven to be a crucial exercise to stimulate the youth on their role in shaping the world they live in. The Universal Peace Federation looks forward to similar events in the near future.
