CEPS has held an open dialogue on the Misuse of Drugs Act. Over 20 members of various organisations attended the dialogue, which was facilitated by Mr Asba and Mr Karunakaran od the Attorney General’s Office.
The objectives of the dialogue was to raise awareness on the Misuse of Drugs Act. The dialogue was an opportunity for member organisations to know of the opportunities and protection that this law creates for civil society organisations as part of the work currently being undertaken and future programmes being planned in the fight against drugs..
As various clauses of the act was being presented, members were able to ask questions and raise their concerns. The discussion held during the dialogue, evolved around many issues including matters involving children and drug use & possession and needle exchange. Members present were able to identify loop holes within the act and were able to put forward their concerns and suggestions as to how the act could be improved. These were taken by representatives of the AG’s office.
In April this year, the National Assembly unanimously passed a ‘modern and comprehensive’ legislation in the fight against drugs.
The Misuse of Drugs Act 2016 includes measures aimed at fighting drug trafficking, abuse, investigation and prosecution. The law also promotes treatment, education, rehabilitation, recovery and the social integration of drug users.This new law replaces the one enacted in 1990.
